What is the ACAP Test?

The ACAP is a series of standardized tests administered to students in Alabama public schools. It assesses their knowledge and skills in various subject areas, including reading, mathematics, science, and English language arts.

The test covers a wide range of subjects and grade levels:

• Reading and Mathematics: Grades 2-8

• Science: Grades 4, 6, and 8

• English Language Arts: Grades 3-8

The ACAP is typically administered in the spring, with specific testing windows varying from year to year. It is a computer-based test, which means students will take the assessment on a digital platform. 

Question Types on the ACAP Test

The types of questions on the ACAP tests vary depending on the grade level and subject area.

For grade 2 students, the ACAP tests act as a baseline assessment, primarily consisting of multiple-choice questions. These questions aim to evaluate how well students can comprehend and recall key concepts in reading and mathematics. These results are then used for comparison when students take the test in grade 3.

As students progress to higher grades, the ACAP tests become more rigorous and incorporate varied question formats. In the English Language Arts (ELA) tests for grades 4 and above, students also need to take a writing task that requires them to comprehend information from a provided passage and construct a written response. What is the ACAP Alternate?

The ACAP recognizes that some students may have significant cognitive disabilities that require alternate assessment methods. For these students, the ACAP Alternate is available as an accommodated version of the standardized test. It assesses the same grade-level academic content as the regular ACAP tests, but it is tailored to meet the unique needs of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. This untimed assessment allows for multiple breaks and can be completed over several days at the test administrator's discretion, considering specific student needs.

Eligibility for the ACAP Alternate is determined through a comprehensive evaluation process that considers a student's individualized education program (IEP) and the severity of their cognitive impairment. Trained educators and specialists work closely with families to identify the most appropriate assessment option for each qualifying student.

Understanding Student Scores on ACAP Tests

The ACAP provides several score types for each student, including:

• Scale Scores: These scores represent a student's overall performance on a particular subject test.

• Achievement Levels: Based on their scale scores, students are classified into four achievement levels:
