How does a flood relief channel prevent flooding?
New channel is created when a meander is engineered to be widener, straighter and deeper. This means the water can flow more easily and carry more water. This means that water can travel faster along the course and divert floodwaters away from settlements.
Newly engineered channel runs parallel to the main river. The floodwater flows into the relief channel and is taken either to an area where it can be absorbed, or re-enters the river further down its course. This means that excess water from the river channel is removed and thus reduces flooding.
Which strategy is being described: can hold more water and less likely to burst banks.
