A few years ago, my family and I were enjoying lamb chops for lunch at a nature reserve in Newcastle, Australia.As we started to eat, we ………….…… a kookaburra watching us from a tree.He flew down to the ground nearby, waiting for us to leave.

We threw the bird a piece of meat that he eagerly grabbed and flew off to eat.Five minutes later, he was back – this time with a ……………….. .We fed them more scraps, and soon there were eight kookaburras waiting for a handout.

I decided to play a trick on them.The bird sat in the tree, and as soon as we threw food, they would swoop down, grab it, and ……………….. I wondered if, in their feeding frenzy, they would fall for something inedible.

……………… one of the large bones, I tossed it to the ground.Sure enough, down swooped a kookaburra.It took off with the bone to a nearby tree.I chuckled as he tried to hit the bone against the branch.I went back to my meal, but a few seconds ………………., there was a faint whistle as something whizzed past my head, ……………..by a thud as it hit the ground.Looking around, I saw there was the bone.In the tree sat the same kookaburra, giving me a cheeky look.

You tried to get back at me, didn’t you? I thought.………………. by its antics, I tossed him one of my best pieces of meat as a reward.
