War because as new territories were added to the US, a decision had to be made as to whether or not the territory would allow slavery or not. The federal government decided to let the citizens decide on if slavery would be allowed. Both sides wanted to have a majority, so as each territory and new state was admitted, smaller fights broke out among those pro-slavery against anti-slavery. These fights continued to grow more intense and more frequent as the US expanded its land west.
