Carnegie was thirteen years old when he got his first job in a textile mill earning $1.20 a week. Due to his quickness and hard work, he soon worked his way upwards through a succession of jobs, each earning more money than the last. In addition to working in the mill, Carnegie worked in a factory, tended a steam engine, and became a telegraph operator, someone who sends messages using a telegraph machine. In 1853, he went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad for $35 per month as an assistant to Thomas Scott, a superintendent.
