Most verbs are action words.
kick, run, jump, study, play
They tell us what the nouns are doing.
The kittens drink milk.
Some are present tense (happening now!)
Batman rescued the boy.
The team ran laps.
Some are past tense (happened in the past!)

Some verbs describe a status or link an idea.
The girl is happy.
"Is" = a verb here because it tells us the girl's status or linking her to happiness.
Some verbs are used to help get a certain idea across.
My brother could be going with us.
"Could be going" is all part of the verb phrase.
