Q.

Tell me all you know about what a ¨set" is in mathematics.

SET THEORY

(As it relates to numbers)

Number Sets

  • Natural Numbers

  • Whole Numbers

  • Integers

  • Rational Numbers and Irrational Numbers

  • Real Numbers

  • Imaginary Numbers

  • Complex Numbers

Natural Numbers

The set of all positive integers. The lowest number in this set is 1, and the set looks like this: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5............infinity}

Natural numbers do not include decimals or fractional parts and the ONLY NUMBER ALLOWED TO THE RIGHT of the DECIMAL is 0.

Q.

Which of the following are Natural numbers? (SELECT ALL THAT APPLY)

answer choices

4.3

3

71

Q.

Click the greater quantity.

answer choices

814\frac{8}{14}

50%50\%

Q.

Check all the quantities that are approximately (equal).

(CHECK ALL THA APPLY)

answer choices

 23\frac{2}{3}

 66.7%66.7\%

 .667.667

 1218\frac{12}{18}

Whole Numbers

The set of all positive integers, plus the number 0. The lowest number in this set is 0, and the set looks like this: {0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5............infinity}

Whole numbers do not include decimals or fractional parts. They can all be written with a .0 on the end and the ONLY NUMBER ALLOWED TO THE RIGHT of the DECIMAL is 0.

Q.

Which sets listed contain whole numbers?

answer choices

{-4, -3, 0, 1, 2, 4}

{0, .25, .33, .5, .75, .83, 1}

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

None of the above

Q.

Click the smaller quantity.

answer choices

 615\frac{6}{15}

 1529\frac{15}{29}

Integers

The set of all integers, plus the number 0. The set looks like this: {negative infinity.....-3,-2,-1,0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5............infinity}

Integers do not include decimals or fractional parts (They all can have a .0 at the end and the ONLY NUMBER ALLOWED TO THE RIGHT of the DECIMAL is 0.)

Q.

Which sets listed contain integers?

(SELECT ALL THAT APPLY)

answer choices

{-4, -3, 0, 1, 2, 4}

{0, .25, .33, .5, .75, .83, 1}

{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

None of the above

Q.

Select the largest number

answer choices

925\frac{9}{25}

.36.36

36%36\%

All the numbers are equal.

Rational Numbers

The set of all numbers that can be written as a ratio of two integers. (THIS IS A LOT OF NUMBERS!!!) It includes decimals, percentages, fractions, integers, natural numbers, whole numbers!

Rational numbers CAN include decimals or fractional parts (They all can have any numbers after the decimals!!)

Q.

Rational numbers can be written as a ratio of two __________

answer

Integers
INTEGERS
Q.

A recipe calls for 3 123\ \frac{1}{2}  quarts of fruit punch,

  1 121\ \frac{1}{2}  pints of lemonade, and

  55  cups of Sprite.  How many cups will the recipe make altogether?

answer
22 cups
alternatives
22
22.0

Irrational Numbers

Irrational numbers cannot be written as a ratio of two integers. However, they fill in the rest of the real number line

(Irrational numbers are usually approximated to some type of decimal)

Real Numbers

The set of all rational and irrational numbers included together. (THESE NUMBERS REPRESENT ALL THE NUMBERS ON THE NUMBER LINE!!)
