There has been a civilization of people living in the area known as India since ancient times. These people spoke many different languages including Hindi. After the British victory in the Battle of Plassey, the British government started to take control of India. England’s King and Queen ruled the government and made all of the laws. One rule was that the official language would be English, so all the government documents were written in English and it was taught in schools. Everyone in India learned English, and even though India is now independent most people still speak English.
