Standards of the Day
6.34 - Identify the political and cultural problems prevalent in the time of Confucius and how the philosophy of Confucianism and The Analects emphasized the concepts of kinship, order, and hierarchy to address these problems.
Linking to Yesterday
After the Shang and Zhou Dynasties ended, there was actually a long series of civil wars known as the Warring States Period.
During this time, no one dynasty was able to maintain peace for very long in China.
Kingdoms at War
Many different powerful families (warlords) declared themselves king and controlled various parts of the Yellow River and Yangzi River Valleys. No one family was powerful enough to conquer the others and bring peace to China, so the wars raged on for over 250 years.
There will always be war from time to time, but what happens if the war rages on for centuries with no peace?
-- Will it be easy for scientists to develop new technologies?
-- Will it be easy for farmers to care for their crops and grow food?
-- Will the people be unified in their thoughts, religion, practices, traditions, etc.?
Kingdoms at War
The constant war brought famine and poverty on the land. Things got really bad, and people were wondering if there would ever be peace again.
A Chinese teacher named Kong Fu Zi (Americanized as Confucius) began teaching a philosophy that he believed would restore peace to China.
The philosphy of Confucianism focuses on the belief that all people are basically good, and will behave correctly if propery taught. Self improvement is possible through an individual and group focus on morals and ethics.
Many of the teachings and actions needed in society were taught through various rituals and ceremonies.
Main Concepts of Confucianism
Kinship (Filial Piety) - The proper relationship between family members serves as an example for all other relationships in society.
Order - There is a correct way to do EVERYTHING! Learn what that proper way is and do it perfect! This is often taught through rituals and ceremonies.
Hierarchy - Those in higher positions should serve as an example to those of lower positions in society (father should be a righteous example to the children, the king should be a moral example to the people)
Did It Work?
Many of his students followed his teachings, but Confucius's teachings would not catch on overall in China until many years after his death.
His students recorded his teachings in a book known as "The Analects." More people became aware of his teachings through this book.
Confucius's teachings were attacked by some groups, but eventually adopted by the Han Dynasty as their official policy.
