Science - LESSON 2 - Models Review Lesson

What is a Model?

A model is used by scientists to REPLICATE a real thing.

Why do Scientists use Models?

Scientists use models to study things that are too big, too small, or too dangerous to study in real life.

Q.

What would a diagram of a butterfly show you?

answer choices

How a butterfly flies

The anatomy of a butterfly

The colors of butterflies

The difference between a butterfly and a moth

Q.

Tommy is researching tadpoles. He wants to show the students in his class the different parts of the tadpole's body, so he makes a model drawing. Why would Tommy choose to make a model drawing of a tadpole?

answer choices

Because a tadpole is large

Because a tadpole is small

Because a tadpole is dangerous to humans

Because a tadpole is expensive

Q.

A model of an airplane is much smaller than a real airplane.

Think about a toy airplane.

What is the biggest difference between a model and real airplane?

answer choices

You will not be able to see inside the windows of the airplane like a real plane.

It will not fly in the sky like a real airplane.

It will not have wings like a real airplane.

The doors will not open like a real airplane.

Q.

Carter has an idea for a new type of wooden boat that will carry loads of special equipment. He wants to quickly build a model of the boat to see if it will float. Which of the following will be hard to do for the model?

answer choices

Put the model boat in water

Paint the outside of the model boat

Make the model boat out of the same material as the real boat

Put models of all the special equipment on the model boat

Q.

Scientists must test cars to be sure that the air bags will keep a person from getting hurt during a crash. Scientists use crash test dummies for these experiments, which are models of people. Why

would a scientist use a crash test dummy instead of a person?

answer choices

It is too expensive to hire a real person.

The crash test dummy fits in the car better than a regular person.

It is too dangerous to use a real person.

Q.

Check all of the reasons that a scientist might choose to use a model

answer choices

If something is small, a drawing would show more detail

It is more fun to make models.

It is safer to use a model when testing designs that could be dangerous.

It is less expensive to try designs in a model before making the real design.

In a good experiment, how many variables should you change at one time?

Q.

Nathan makes different paper airplane designs. He flies them to help him understand how real airplanes can fly. What can Nathan learn about real airplanes from his models?

answer choices

How well different airplane designs can fly

How an airplane engine works

How to fly an airplane through the clouds

Q.

What is the FIRST step in the scientific process?

answer choices

Do the experiment.

Ask a question.

Draw conclusions.

Make a hypothesis.

Q.

After you ask a question in the scientific process, what is the NEXT step?

answer choices

Make a hypothesis.

Do the experiment.

Draw conclusions.

Plan the experiment.

Q.

Which of these statements are true? Check the true statements.

answer choices

Scientists use models to study things that are too big, too small, or too dangerous to study in real life.

The constants in an experiment are the things that stay the same.

Models are always better to use in an experiment than the real thing.

You should state your hypothesis at the end of the experiment.

If an experiment proves your hypothesis was wrong, you must have done something wrong during your experiment.

Q.

What does it mean to DRAW CONCLUSIONS in the scientific process?

answer choices

Draw a picture

Write what you learned in the experiment

Make a prediction

Conduct the experiment.
