When do we use gerund? (check all answers applied)
After certain verbs like "avoid", "deny", "enjoy", "involve", "mind" and "suggest".
after certain expressions such as "I can't stand", "It's no good", "It's no use", "How about" and "There is no point".
After prepositions (e.g. for, about, before, by, apart from, and, without)
Used as the subject of a sentence. For example, "Swimming" is good for health.
'-ing'.... participle? gerund? verb?
I like swimming.
I am singing.
I like relaxing movies.
Participle = adjective
When it is a 'present participle" in the form of "verb+ing", it plays the role of an adjective.
The song is really relaxing.
The boys like to play exciting games.
Verb
When it goes with verb-to-be (is/am/are/was/were...), it is part of the verb.
She is sleeping.
Miss Chan has been teaching since 8.15am this morning.
The kids were paying attention.
Gerund = noun
