    The Analogue Computer

In the 1950s, different artists used analogue computers and mechanical tools to produce works that were believed to be the precursors of digital artwork. One of them was Ben Laposky who in 1952 created the “Oscillons” which was made by manipulating the electronic wavesthat appear on screen.  Analogue Computers - transmit signalthrough copper wire

The artist, Ben Laposky, used an oscilloscope to manipulate electronic

waves that appeared on the small fluorescent screen. An oscilloscope is a device for displaying the wave shape of an electric signal, commonly used for electrical testing purposes. The waves would have been constantly moving and there would have been no way of recording these movements on paper at this time. It was only through long exposure photography that the artist was ableto record these fleeting moments, allowing us to see them decades later.

Mathematicians and scientists explore the creative potential of computers, by using programs they designed themselves.

In 1965, a mathematician, Frieder Nake, was inspired to reimagine the painting of artist Paul Klee, titled 'Highroads and Byroads'. He entered algorithms to room - sized computers which mathematically interpreted the artwork and titled the finished product as the “Hommage à Paul Klee.”

    Timeline

    • 1960 - Some artists developed mechanical drawing machines which aid them to create works. Desmond Paul Henry constructed them from bomb-sight computers which produced artworks with abstract drawings.

    • 1970 - MIcrosoft and Apple started producing personal computers

    • 1980 - computers started to be seen everywhere with paint software which can be used in simple digital image creation.
